Talented actor Leonardo DiCaprio is in final talks to play Jim Jones—the leader of the Peoples Temple religious group who was behind the 1978 mass murder-suicide—in MGM’s upcoming film, according to Variety.
In this film, DiCaprio will not only be an actor, but he will also serve as a producer through his Appian Way company. Venom film writer Scott Rosenberg also joins as a scriptwriter and executive producer.
The film, which will star DiCaprio, does not yet have a title. However, it’s confirmed that the film is about the controversial cult leader—Jim Jones.
On November 18, 1978, Jim Jones orchestrated a mass murder-suicide that took place in Jonestown, Guyana. He instructed his followers to drink a cyanide-laced liquid. And those who resisted would be shot or injected with the liquid.
According to Rolling Stone, the harrowing tragedy claimed more than 900 lives, including Jim Jones, who was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head. And there is some speculation about Jones taking his own life.
The event also birthed the phrase “drinking the Kool-Aid”.
