Due to its global success, Squid Game is officially returning for a second season.
Squid Game director and scriptwriter Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed this while attending a screening and Q&A in Los Angeles, on November 8, 2021.
“I do have a basic storyline for season two — it’s all in my head — and I am currently in the brainstorming stage,” the writer-director told The Hollywood Reporter. “It will happen, someday, but as for when I cannot tell you the details.”
Hwang Dong-hyuk also said that there were a lot of positive questions from fans regarding the continuation of the Korean drama.
“There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season,” he said. “And I will promise you this, Gi-hun will be back and he’ll do something for the world.”
In an interview with Variety in late September, Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that he doesn’t have any solid plans for Squid Game season 2.
“I don’t have well developed plans for ‘Squid Game 2.’ It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors,” said him.
Although Netflix has yet to confirm this, Squid Game season 2 is reportedly in the discussion stage.
“A second season is in discussions, but not confirmed yet,” a Netflix spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter.
The success of Squid Game is undeniable. Based on data from Nielsen, the Korean drama has been streamed for more than 3 billion minutes. Even the famous actor Rami Malek recently parodied the popular series on Saturday Night Live (SNL).
And a few weeks ago, Netflix announced that Squid Game is its most popular original series, and the only series on the platform to reach 111 million views in less than two months.
